My intentions of this blog are to of course showcase my talents but also to encourage others to bake! I want to show people that you do not have to attend a culinary arts school (if you do, that is obviously great!) to be successful in the baking business. You do not need super expensive equipment or a large oven to get wonderful and professional looking results. I have been in this business for a few years and I have learned so much without taking one class! And I want to share with you what I have learned.

Steelers Football Cake

I made this cake for my step-dad's birthday. He is the ultimate Pittsburgh Steelers Fan! He loves football and all of his birthday gifts this year were Steelers themed so what better way was there to celebrate than having a cake to match the occasion...lol. This one was pretty easy for me. I just used a football cake pan and covered the cake in buttercream icing. I also took a circle of fondant and hand painted the Steelers logo. And he loved it of course! He isn't a fan of icing at all but I had to make it look nice so he didn't mind at all. Again, this is very simple and easy to make :) The pan completely shapes the cake and all you have to do is cover with icing!

Flower Sheet Cake

This was a very simple and quick cake for me. My grandmother put in an order for some function that she was going to and said that the cake didn't need to be elaborate, just a sheet cake. This is a 1/4 sheet cake completely covered in buttercream icing. I decided to practice my rose making skills on this cake and as you can see, I need much more practice...lol. I also added some rosebuds, vines and leaves and there is my masterpiece! I love when I have free reign over a cake because I can make the into anything that I want. This blank slate allowed me to practice my flower making skills and everyone loved the way that it looked too :)

Elephant Baby Shower Cake

This cake goes along with the Pink & Purple pregnant belly cake that I made below. The customer ordered two cakes for the special occasion!!! This is an 8 inch round cake covered in fondant and decorated with two beautiful hand crafted elephants, fondant flowers and hand painted circles. I looked at a picture of elephants and used a knife to carve the fondant images but alas I have found and easier way to do this (for next time...lol). I will share that technique on another blog post. This was a cute little cake that took no longer than an hour to decorate and the customers really enjoyed it!

Bye Bye Tummy, Hello Mommy Belly Cake

Baby showers are always fun and you cannot have one without a cake! This is a cake asked to be specifically designed by the customer. I have already made one of these cakes so this wasn't a new idea for me, well it was a little different from the first one that I made. The entire cake is covered in fondant and what is different about this cake is that this mommy has a little bit of cleavage showing (she's a hot mama...lol). I used pink fondant with a light purple trimming on the cake to match the baby shower's theme. And the the written words "Bye Bye Tummy, Hello Mommy" makes the cake so adorable!!

Nurse Themed Cake

This cake was a huge success and I really enjoyed making this one!! My mother-in-law is a pediatric nurse at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and she asked me to make a cake for a friend of hers. This friend was celebrating both her 50th birthday and also just earned herself a masters degree in nursing and the cake was to celebrate both occasions. I knew that there cake would definitely have a nurse theme to it but I was a bit unsure of how to incorporate the degree portion (had to get my creative juices flowing...lol). And here is what I came up with!!
This is a 1/4 sheet pound cake covered in buttercream icing. When I thought of nurse the first few things that popped into my head were; Stethoscope, band-aids, medicine and needles (YIKES!). I didn't make a needle but I did make everything else...lol. Everything is made of fondant except for the pills, they are Skittles! I incorporated the degree information by making a fondant scroll and writing "Congrats on Your Master's Degree Marie" on the little bit that I left unrolled. I would say it turned out a success!! Me being me, I say it should be much neater but my customer was very much satisfied!!!

Hubby's Birthday Cake (Basketball meets Football meets Kappa)

My wonderful hubby's 26th birthday was May 17th and we celebrated all weekend! And of course a birthday wouldn't be complete without a birthday cake!! This cake is sort of a spin off of the groom's cake that I wanted to make for him (I was very tired planning the wedding...lol). So I promised that I would make him a cake and here it is!
So, the cake follows 3 concepts that describe my lovebug (there are many more of course but I chose these three). If anybody knows Aaron they know that he knows everything there is to know about basketball! He loves this sport just about as much as he loves me...lol. His favorite football team is the San Francisco 49ers. And yes he was absolutely devastated when they lost the Superbowl this year :'(. Aaron is also a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. Below is a description of each part of the cake.
This basketball is completely made of cake and is covered in buttercream icing tinted orange. This 3-D cake was made using the ball cake pan set. I used the star tip to pipe on the buttercream and then used some black fondant pieces to make the lines on the basketball (sucks that they aren't straight, I will work on that).

This cake is a small 6 inch cake covered in buttercream as well. Around the front of the cake are fondant Greek letters (Kappa, Alpha & Psi) in red and white (his frat's colors, crimson and cream). There are also 2 crimson and cream canes in front of those letters, another symbol related to the frat. The top of the cake is dedicated to the 49ers. I covered the top in green buttercream for grass. And right in the middle is a the team's logo, handcrafted from fondant. And right next to that is a fondant football.

Cupcake Bouquets!!!

This past Mother's Day, I sold these beautiful cupcake bouquets and I got a great deal of business. 6 cupcakes are arranged onto a Styrofoam ball that is tightly placed inside of a small flower pot. The pot is the decorated using false flowers, tissue paper and ribbon. The bouquets that I make can be customized in any color and to fit any occasion. My small bouquets sold for $15.00 each :) Here are some sample pictures.

Mortar Board Graduation Cake

The month of June equals Graduation season so you know that I would be making at least one cake/batch of cupcakes. I have one member of my family who is a senior of the Class of 2013. He graduated from the same high school that I went to so I definitely wanted to make him a cake. Here is what I came up with!
I have always been amazed at how people made Graduation hat cakes and I just had to figure it out for myself so, I turned to trusty youtube.com. And you won't believe how simple it was!! The base of the hat is made from half a ball cake pan covered in fondant. And the top of the hat is a small piece of cardboard covered in fondant. That wasn't enough cake for my family (I knew that in advance) so I had to set that on top of an 8 inch round cake. The cake is decorated in Garnet/Maroon icing because our school colors are Maroon & Gray/Steel & Garnet. The cake says "Congrats Kyree" "2013" and "Girard College" (the name of the school).

Update on Sweet Tee

So, I have not blogged in a very long time but I am back!!! I've gotten married (I'm Mrs. Dogan now) and I am working on preparing a house to be moved into. In the meantime, I have of course been baking!! And I have a tom of new projects to share!!! It's so very exciting. And I am now beginning to think about baking full-time and long term but I need money to do that of course. But it is now definitely a long term goal that hubby and I have discussed and opening my own bakery is definitely something that I see in the future for me. I am working on a website and am getting new business cards so look out for me!!! New posts coming very soon :)
